What do the numbers on a slot info screen actually mean?
Every certified slot publishes a handful of figures in its information screen. These are the ones that describe what the game costs and how it behaves, and they are the terms most often misread.
RTP (return to player)
The percentage of all money wagered on a slot that the game is designed to pay back over its full mathematical cycle, usually verified across tens or hundreds of millions of simulated spins. A 96% game returns RM96 per RM100 of turnover over that horizon, not per session. Full breakdown on the RTP explained page.
House edge
The share of turnover a slot keeps, which is 100% minus the RTP. A 96% RTP slot carries a 4% house edge, or RM4 of theoretical cost per RM100 wagered. It is the same fact as RTP stated from the other end.
Volatility (variance)
How a slot spreads its payouts over time. Low volatility games pay small amounts often; high volatility games pay rarely but larger. Volatility does not change the long-run return, only the shape of a session. See the slot volatility guide.
Hit frequency
The proportion of spins that return anything at all, including wins smaller than the stake. A 25% hit frequency means roughly one spin in four pays something. It is a separate figure from RTP and the two are not correlated in any dependable direction.
Max win
The ceiling on what a single spin or feature can pay, quoted as a multiple of stake. A 5,000x cap and a 21,100x cap tell you where the return is concentrated: very high caps almost always mean money has been pulled out of ordinary spins to fund the rare enormous one.

How does a slot decide what counts as a win?
Modern slots use at least four different rules for turning matching symbols into money, and players routinely confuse them. The rule in force is printed in the paytable.
Payline
A defined pattern of symbol positions across the reels that pays when matching symbols land on it, usually read from the left. Classic slots use anywhere from 1 to 50 fixed lines. Compared in full on the slot paylines page.
Ways to win
A pay rule that drops the line pattern and pays for matching symbols in any row on adjacent reels. A standard 5x3 grid gives 243 ways; Mahjong Ways runs 1,024 and its sequel 2,000. Position on the reel does not matter, reel order does.
Megaways
A licensed mechanic from Big Time Gaming in which each reel shows a random number of symbols per spin, usually two to seven. The ways to win are the symbol counts multiplied together, so six reels of seven symbols gives 117,649 ways. Explained on the Megaways page.
Cluster pays
A pay rule where a win is a group of matching symbols touching each other on the grid, horizontally or vertically, rather than a line across reels. Dragon Hatch is the cluster pays title covered on this site; see Dragon Hatch.
Scatter pays
A pay rule where only the count of matching symbols on screen matters, with no paylines and no left-to-right requirement. Gates of Olympus, Sweet Bonanza and Starlight Princess pay on eight or more matching symbols anywhere. See Gates of Olympus.
Tumble (cascading reels)
A mechanic where winning symbols are removed after a win and new symbols fall into the gaps, so a single paid spin can resolve several times. Pragmatic Play calls it Tumble; PG Soft pairs cascades with a climbing multiplier. See Pragmatic Play and Wild Bandito.
Gigablox

Which symbols change the maths of a spin, and how?
Two special symbols do most of the work in a modern slot, and the features they trigger are where most of the return is concentrated.
Wild symbol
A symbol that substitutes for other paying symbols to complete a winning combination. Variants include expanding, sticky and multiplier wilds, each of which changes the maths differently. A wild normally cannot replace a scatter. Covered on the wild and scatter guide.
Scatter symbol
A symbol that pays or triggers a feature wherever it lands, because it ignores payline rules entirely. Landing three or more scatters is the standard free spins trigger in most video slots; the scatter pays titles use four.
Multiplier
A value that scales a win, for example x2, x5 or x500. Multipliers can attach to wilds, land as separate orb symbols, or climb with each consecutive cascade. Whether they apply per win or once to a whole sequence is a rule printed in the paytable. See Mahjong Ways for a climbing ladder.
Free spins
A bonus round of spins at a locked stake, usually triggered by scatters, in which the rules or multipliers change. Most modern slots keep the interesting part of their paytable inside this round, which is why studios sell direct entry to it.
Respin (Hold and Spin)
A feature where some symbols lock in place and the remaining positions spin again. Pragmatic Play's Hold and Spin and the Fortune Tiger respin are examples. See Fortune Tiger.
Bonus buy (feature buy)
An option to pay a fixed multiple of stake, commonly 50x to 200x, to trigger the free spins round immediately. Studios often certify a separate RTP for the bought feature. Buying does not improve the edge; it removes the base game and accelerates spend. See bonus buy slots.

What is the difference between a fixed and a progressive jackpot?
Three different things are sold under the word jackpot, and they pay on completely different logic.
Fixed jackpot
A top prize of a set amount, built into the paytable like any other win. It does not grow and does not take a slice from other players' stakes. Explained on the jackpot slots page.
Progressive jackpot
A prize pool that grows by taking a small slice of every qualifying bet, either from one game (standalone) or across many games and operators (networked). Because the slice comes out of base-game return, progressive titles publish a lower base RTP. Odds on networked pools are typically quoted in the millions to one.

What do the buttons and settings on a slot actually control?
None of these change the return of the game. They change exposure, pace and what you can learn before staking.
Bet level (stake)
The amount wagered per spin, set from a range the operator configures in ringgit. Stake and session length are the only two variables under a player's control, and they govern exposure, not return. The range is one of the five checks on the new slots page.
Autoplay
A setting that runs a chosen number of spins automatically at the current stake. It changes nothing about the odds of any spin; it removes the pause between them, which is why loss and time limits matter more when it is on.
Demo mode
The real game running on a play-money balance worth nothing. Useful for learning a paytable and seeing how a feature triggers; useless as a signal, because demo results are not linked to real-money results. See slot demo mode.
Paytable (info screen)
The screen inside every certified slot, usually behind an i or menu icon, that lists symbol values, the pay rule, feature rules, the RTP, the volatility rating and the maximum win. It describes the exact build in front of you, which a review or forum post cannot.

Who decides a slot's outcome and its published figures?
Operators host games; studios build them and set the maths. Knowing which is which settles most arguments about fairness.
RNG (random number generator)
The software that produces a continuous stream of values; the game maps the value at the instant you press spin to positions on the reel strips. The reel animation plays after the outcome is fixed. Set out in how slot machines work.
Certified RNG
A random number generator and maths model that an independent testing laboratory has examined and certified as a specific build. Operators run the certified version and cannot retune it from an admin panel.
Provider (studio)

Which bonus terms decide what free credit is really worth?
A bonus is priced by its terms, not by its headline. These are the four that do the pricing.
Turnover (wagering requirement, rollover)
The total value of qualifying bets that must be placed before bonus funds become withdrawable. Calculated as multiplier times base: U88's welcome offer is 12x on deposit plus bonus, so a matched RM800 deposit needs RM19,200 of bets. Worked through on the wagering requirement page.
Game weighting
The percentage of each bet that counts toward turnover, set by game category. Slots normally count at 100%; categories with a thinner house edge count for a fraction or nothing. At 10% weighting a RM3,600 requirement needs RM36,000 of actual betting.
Cap on promotional winnings
The maximum that can be withdrawn from a balance built on bonus funds. At U88 winnings from promotional funds are capped at RM10,000 per bonus unless a specific promotion states otherwise. Terms on the promotions page.
